A bridge between worlds, where the fury of post-metal meets the grace of folklore.
Much more than just a musical project, Sylvaine is the sonic embodiment of a fascinating duality. Driven by the visionary multi-instrumentalist from Norway, Kathrine Shepard, this project weaves a complex tapestry of emotions, creating a transcendent bridge between raw, tangible human existence and our most ethereal spiritual origins.
Sylvaine is one of the few women leading a solo project in the atmospheric metal scene. She is often compared to Alcest (France) for the dreamlike aspect or to Chelsea Wolfe for the dark and haunting quality.
A Symphony of Contrasts, the Alchemy between Light and Darkness
The universe of Sylvaine rests on a precarious and beautiful balance between opposing forces. Her music is a constant exploration of light and darkness, serenity and chaos. At the crossroads of Blackgaze, Post-Metal, and Ethereal Wave, Kathrine Shepard builds sound cathedrals where the brutality of distorted guitars and piercing screams collides with diaphanous melodies and a clear, almost supernatural voice. It is music that breathes the landscapes of her native Norway: one can feel the biting cold of Scandinavian winters as much as the reassuring warmth of an ancient hearth. Each composition is a catharsis, channeling the inherent struggle of the human soul: that of being anchored in this world while eternally yearning for another.
Her music is a quest for balance between sonic and existential extremes. Through her compositions, she explores this feeling of strangeness that sometimes arises in the face of the human condition, this vertigo of being an exile within one's own existence. Like a fairy tale woven from the threads of Norwegian folklore, a narrative that echoes the spirits of ancient forests and the whispers of long-forgotten creatures. With each ethereal note and each enchanting melody, she evokes images of wild forests, misty clearings inhabited by mystical beings. In these compositions, there is an undeniable sense of transcendence, where listeners are transported beyond the limits of the ordinary into a dreamlike landscape where reality and fantasy converge. A deep sense of wonder and fascination creates a unique musical alchemy, with a touch of enchantment that lingers long after the music has ceased.
The Architect of an Inner World
If Sylvaine shines on international stages accompanied by talented musicians (sometimes including members of the pioneering band Alcest), the heart of the project beats to the rhythm of a single person. In the studio, Kathrine Shepard is the total architect of her work. An accomplished multi-instrumentalist, she composes, arranges, and performs almost all the instruments — guitars, basses, synthesizers, vocals — often delegating only the drums. This absolute mastery has earned her recognition from critics and peers, solidified by two nominations for the prestigious Spellemannprisen (the Norwegian Grammy Awards).
The Return to Roots: “Eg Er Framand”
Recently, Sylvaine began a new chapter in her odyssey with the EP “Eg Er Framand.” Temporarily stepping away from her saturated walls of sound, she explores the richness of Norwegian heritage. Like a modern storyteller reviving forgotten legends, she brings to life folk tales and ancestral melodies. It is an introspective journey, a dive into misty forests and the mysticism of ancient times, revealing a more organic and spiritual facet of her art.
The Solo Stage Experience, the Intimate Turn: A New Vulnerability
Echoing this quest for authenticity, Sylvaine now offers a bold and deeply intimate live experience: the solo performance. Abandoning the massive power of a full band, Kathrine presents herself alone before the audience, without artifice. Armed only with her electric guitar, her voice, and a few minimalist loops, she strips her songs to reveal their bare essence.
A minimalist rereading, an embraced vulnerability: The standout tracks from her discography (from albums like Nova or Atoms Aligned, Coming Undone) are reinterpreted in stripped-down versions, offering a new perspective on her writing.
An enchanting atmosphere: Thanks to a play of textures and loops, she manages to recreate, alone, lush soundscapes that envelop the listener, transforming the concert hall into a dreamlike sanctuary.
An emotional and spiritual communion: This “hyper-vulnerable” format breaks the barrier between the artist and the spectator. It is an invitation to enter directly into Kathrine's inner world, an intense moment of sharing where each silence weighs as much as each note.
Whether in the sonic surge or in the whisper of a folk melody, Sylvaine offers a timeless escape, an invitation to touch, for the duration of a concert, the part of eternity that resides in each of us. Whether she unleashes the elements with her band or whispers ancient tales alone with her guitar, her music remains an invitation to journey: a powerful catharsis to escape, if only for a moment, from tangible reality.
